At Zone 6, Soweto, AKA, Kabelo (Bouga two shoes), Jah Seed and Admiral come to the same platform to cheer the crowds. The concept, developed by four young men from Soweto: Sello Moema, Thabo Moagi, Tiyiselani Mashele and Sibusiso Mkhwanazi , came about when they saw their different tastes and styles and decided to combine those skills to bring entertainment.

“We’ve been operational since April 2010 and the support has been tremendous as we’ve hosted more than 5000 people,” notes Mashele. The event was MC’ed by Phila Madlingozi, son to Ringo Madlingozi who just landed a role in Intersexions as the character Zolile. “These are my boys and I’m just giving them the support as I’ve been to every Authentic Sundays since the project came about,” says Madlingozi.

Jah Seed and Admiral christened this particular event with a fusion of reggae, dance hall and Hip Hop, paying homage to Lucky Dube and Bob Marley in recognition of Africa Day which was commemorated on 25 May. “We’ve done some work with Red Bull as they’ve supported a lot of the gigs that we have in Bassline Newtown every Thursday and for us the significance was the event being so close to Africa Day so we played Lucky Dube and Bob Marley as we felt they’ve contributed a lot towards music,” said Admiral.

The event saw artists like Teargas, Amunishn and Flabba coming to support their friends in the music industry. “We’re here to have a good time, relax and enjoy ourselves while getting to experience how the Soweto crowd parties,” explained K.O of Teargas. Kabelo bought with him his old school raps and house infused kwaito by perfoming songs like Dubula, Balele and Reverse Lomhlaba. He also introduced the crowd to two new songs, Sanibonani and Amakhosi ajabulile which the artists said were recorded prior the event. Much to a delightful crowd, AKA took to the stage and murked it!  “I’d heard about Authentic Sundays so I was honored when they asked me to perform and we must note the history of Soweto and its significance which was a major draw card for my performance tonight and I’ve really had a great time,” said AKA.

Authentic Sundays are hosted every two months with the aim of making hip hop an attractive feature in Soweto. “We want people to come to Soweto to have a good time, enjoy good music of different kinds hence we bought the different artists,” Mkhwanazi explains.
