Rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis collected four awards at the 56th annual Grammy Awards that took place last night in Los Angeles, California. The duo took an early award for Best New Artist. “Wow, we’re here on the stage right now”, said Macklemore, “I want to say we made this album without a record label, we made it independently and we appreciate all the support”.
That was just the beginning for the “Same Love” hit-makers as they went on to win Best Rap Song for their chart-topper “Thrift Shop”, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album for their platinum-selling debut album, The Heist, beating rival nominees – Kanye West, Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake.
While Compton kid, Kendrick Lamar, has been touted as a breath of fresh air – and his cinematic Good Kid M.A.A.D City as a classic – it came as no surprise that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were the recipient of that prize. Many people, however (including Macklemore himself) expected Kendrick to win. After the awards ceremony, Macklemore revealed a screen shot of a text he sent to Kendrick. “You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and it sucks that I robbed you”, reads the text message.
Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were also up for the coveted Album of the Year, and they lost to French electronic music duo, Daft Punk, for Random Access Memories. The robotic duo also took home Record of the Year for their smash hit “Get Lucky” which features Pharrell Williams, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Dance/Electronica Album.
In an unprecedented moment at the Grammys, 33 couples (both gay and straight) were married by Queen Latifah during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ performance of their gay rights anthem, “Same Love”.
