IMG-20140218-WA001 012SOUTH TAKING IT BACK TO THE STREETS 012SOUTH TAKING IT BACK TO THE STREETS IMG 20140218 WA001What happens when you take two ambitious artists who both specialise in music production, song-writing and club DJing? You get Indie Hip Hop group 012SOUTH…

Made up of Dr.Feel and MAT, they formed in mid 2009 when they met in Olieven, South of CapC ity during a time when MAT was on a solo run, spitting bars in cyphers long before he met Dr.Feel. A few tracks down the line, it became clear that both individual styles worked well together and the rest as they say is history…

Having been hard at work on their second mixtape Back To The Streets, hosted by Cap City DJ Goldfingers, the mixtape is said to represent the origins of rap, more specifically them going back to the streets and hustling their way up to the top. The Mixtape features a whole lot of Cap City’s hottest unsigned artists such as Katapila,Mosankie, Issa Matthews, 7VN, Slang G(MP) & KK.

With a south side trap feel, blended with a dubstep touch and a soulful taste, the mixtape is already proving its worth, as the groups first official single titled ‘Lost’, which was released on 16 Feb, has already received a fair share of radio airplay on both national and local radio stations.

The mixtape will be released at the end of February, which gave HYPE a chance to have a one on on with the duo on their expectations.

The competition is getting tough within our local rap scene, what’s your opinion on this?

Competition is getting tougher which for starters is a good thing ’cause us as 012South believe that competition is healthy. Gone are the days when you could look up to only a few cats for new material which is a different thing now ’cause there are so many freshmen who bring a new sound everyday. The sad thing is major record labels that don’t wanna groom artists but prefer signing the ones that already have a buzz.

You think our local industry is on the right path, considering our vast influences from the international Hip Hop industry?

Yes mos def, even the quality of the music & production has just started to match up with the rest of the world but that doesn’t mean that we have to copy and paste exactly what they are doing. I mean if we can use both our African flavour and merge it with what the rest of the world is doing we will mos def become trend setters and game changers in the Hip Hop Industry.

What kind of sound does 012South produce?

We mainly produce urban music; we fuse a whole lot of sounds ranging from your jazzy sound, dubstep, electro, trap, and add more of the African feel to it which in short we can say we make urban African Hip Hop.

Which local guys would you say are winning today?

For us we would say Khuli Chana, AKA, Reason, JR, Jack Parrow and Da Les are really holding it down by the horns, but there are a couple of guys who are also kicking it as well, like Cassper Nyovest and Ifani.

Any other projects that you’re currently working on?

At the moment we’re planning on a music video for ‘Lost’. We are also working towards one of the biggest music festivals in Pretoria called #100Barz.

One word that best describes 012South?

Incomparable!
