Yesterday we reported the mild Twitter controversy caused by acclaimed Durban producer Sketchy Bongo’s comments that, Aewon Wolf “put Durban on the map.” As you can imagine, the statement did not go down well with everyone and it tail-spinned into a good few hours of discussion among peers and fans, which you can view here.
Sketchy was not impressed with how his statement was received (and not impressed with our “irresponsible journalism” either) and took to our Facebook page to clear the air, saying that he was not referring to music and that “it was Aewon and Run DBN that made sure hip hop from Durban was recognised nationally.”
Considering that, even beyond the music, Aewon has been on these streets for Durban way before hashtags, it is definitely a plausible statement. Aewon chimed in to affirm that he is not at all here for the controversy but is rather here to build on what his city has already established.
We can’t be mad at that; Durban is killing shit and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Onwards and upwards!
