Weekly Hip Hop Review with D.E.S 26-07-12
July 26, 2012
Welcome to Hip Hop weekly review with D.E.S where you find groundbreaking hip hop headliners, first things first – Life is good. This week is no different as we take a look at Cyhi’s latest street project featuring the likes of Yelawolf, Big Sean, Big K.R.I.T, Chris Brown and more. Tech N9ne and B.o.B hit gold and not one but two Mcs that have been making hit records in the day and get sentenced at night, excuse me I just gave you mixed feelings. 2 Chainz and Beanie Sigel are the latest to reveal details of their latest projects. And oh I almost forgot this one Hov is back.
The 17th of July was the release date for Nas’ Life is good album. The LP features Swizz Beats, Rick Ross, Amy Winehouse, Mary J Blige, Large Professor, Miguel and more. The Don takes some time on track 9 ‘You Wouldn’t Understand’ to share what he listens to: ‘Jeezy and Hov and some Rozay’. When Nas dies, he feels they should make that day a holiday, you can call him Nas Casalana. The God’s son has reunited with his 90’s flow on this one take a listen to the cut with Amy.
I’ve been reading an article on our website titled ‘Chris Brown rapping better than most’ written by Rudzani. I have to agree with Rudzani – Breezy is doing better than some of the rappers that are making airwaves. Take a listen to his ‘Mercy’ freestyle and I don’t like freestyle where he features Game. Rappers better step up their game.
Kanye West’s artist Cyhi The Prynce has blessed real lyricism enthusiasts with his latest opus, The Ivy League Club Mixtape. One might need the help of a dictionary for proper understanding; Cyhi’s wordplay is on Pluto. Ivy League stands for perfection, elitism and excellence, just Google it and it will make sense. The 21 track tape has production from Beat Billionaire, Lex Luger, Drumma Boy and more. I expected some production from Mr. West himself and a verse or two, come on now West or is it because Cyhi’s stylishness is too fly for Yeezy to keep up with?
Jae Millz is the latest YMCMB member to send shots to Pusha T on his latest freestyle ‘Hearing voices’. ‘Fu*k everybody tryna come at YMCMB and if you fall under that umbrella, its whatever’ raps Millz on the song. Here Millz make it clear that he aiming at Pusha as he goes on and on about a liar who claimed to be dealing white and yall know how Pusha is obsessed with rapping that cocaine rap. Let’s wait and see if this is gonna come to fruition.
While the Hip Hop community celebrated Nasir Jones comeback with Life is good, Hov resurfaced on ‘3 kings’, Rick Ross’s latest single ft. Dr. Dre and Jigga. Hov still kills it with lazy verses. It’s just different. Hov delivers an OMG verse on this one and without him the song wouldn’t live up to its hype. The Doc brags about his success and his brand of headphones (Beats by Dre) which have become part of the culture while Rozay hustles for his son’s tuition. Jigga only loves her when the weave is new, don’t we all do haha. Am I the only one mad that it’s not the Doc’s production? Nevertheless Jake One did a marvelous job. Expect to see rappers hopping on this one. I know it’s just different.
B.o.B and Tech N9ne have one thing in common, they have moved 500 000 copies for their singles. B.o.B got the gold plaque for his song ft. Taylor Swift ‘Both of us’ and Tech N9ne got it for ‘Caribou Lou’ which is from his 2006 debut album Ever-ready. Well done guys. May Tech N9ne see more to come.
Beanie Sigel has will release a new album on August 28th titled This Time. The single is already out ft. State property titled ‘The Reunion’. Uncle 2 Chainz has revealed the album cover of his debut album Based on a T.R.U. story, and yup you guessed it – he’s on the cover with 2 chains… The album drops two weeks after Beans ‘this time’ and the single is killing the club scene ft. Drizzy ‘No lie’.
Gucci Mane’s protégé Waka Flocka Flame also released his second solo album Triple F life which has features by Meek Mill, B.o.B, Trey Songz, Drake, Ludacris, Bun B and Travis Porter. The album is pretty good if you can withstand that Flocka sound “Flocka, Flocka, Flocka’. The outro is a must listen. In 2011 Flocka promised us that he would reach out to J Cole but that never happened. Is it the clash of their sounds or Cole is just busy? If anyone knows where Cole is hiding please tell him to come out, we miss him and his free music.
On a not so happy note Young Buck and BG have both been sentenced to some time behind bars. Young Buck has been sentenced to 3 years which he will only serve 18 months since the judge ordered him to serve his charges concurrently. He is charged for being a convicted felon in possession weapons. One of Cash Money’s earlier signings BG has been sentenced to 14 years for gun possession and witness tampering. Beware Lauryn Hill that you are not the next one to follow.
Worth mentioning
- Lil Wayne aka ‘Mr. Trukfit’ and Big Sean aka ‘Mr. Finally Famous’ are waking the neighborhood in Weezy’s video for ‘My Homies Still’ the single is to be on Lil Wayne’s I Am Not Human 2
- Meek Mill and Drake released the video off Dream Chasers 2 for Meeks club banger ‘Amen’. There are cameo features from Juelz Santana, J Cole, French Montana and more. It’s a lot of rappers in the video, Amen
- Mike Will Made It is still preparing his debut album and recruits all the South side MC’s to help him fight with words. The cut is titled ‘Fighting Word’ and features T.I, Juicy J and Trae The Truth; beware not to be bruised while listening lol.
- MMG’s freshest member Rockie Fresh recruited his boss for the remix of ‘you a lie’,
- The Dream and Pusha T are dealing white in their latest music video for the single “Dope B***h’. This is a nice clean video; yall should take some time out and YouTube it.
- Swizz beats and Pusha T are in this ho with Swizzy’s new summer anthem. Yall know Swizz get your dancing shoes on.
