Sashi Naidoo
November 7, 2011
Actress. TV presenter. Model. Cover girl. Personality. Entrepreneur. Sashi Naidoo has done it all. Voted 4th in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in 2010, this Port Elizabethan beauty has brains to match – and she’s a hip hop fiend. Got your vote?
How did you first get into hip hop and which artists are you listening to at the moment?
I would definitely say I am a hip hop girl at heart. To pay my way through varsity I used to throw parties on the side… Music just became a part of me. I love me a bit of Drake, Jay-Z, Eve, Ready D and anything by Swizz Beats. Aside from hip hop, Florence and the Machine is rocking my world at the moment.
Favourite hip hop artist in SA?
No contest… HHP. Okay, Slikour is a close second.
Favourite international hip hop artist?
Jay-Z. Not just because of his own music output, but for how much he has done for the industry.
What makes a model sexy besides the obvious outward appearance?
I think a sense of mystery makes a woman sexy. A woman whose best features aren’t her most obvious. I find it very UNSEXY when a woman puts it all on display.
You own your own successful model agency, Alush Model Management. What do you look for when screening models for your company?
When I screen models I obviously have to look at physical appearance but second to that professionalism is critical. A lot of girls think that modelling is something fun to do on the side but it is actually hard work and requires commitment and dedication to succeed.
What is the one misconception about you?
Because I am always out and about, people tend to think I am a real party animal, but most of the time I am at social engagements. I love being at home.
What’s your favourite body feature?
[laughs] I like my breasts.
What does beauty mean to you?
I know this sounds cliché but beauty must be something that comes from within. Owning a model agency, I deal with ‘beautiful’ people all day. But I have come to realise that inner beauty shows. Being honest and caring makes you a far more beautiful person than cosmetic surgery or good genetics ever will.
How important is it to be independent as a woman with her own business?
I moved out of home when I was 17, ready to take on the world… I have learnt so many valuable lessons along the way, but the most important was learning how to ask for help when you need it.
What are your long-term ambitions?
I would like to be the owner of one of the most successful agencies in the country but still hold on to the ethics I value in the process.
Who’s better? Kool G Rap or Kool Keith?
Kool G Rap.
Best part about being a South African?
There are so many things I love about this rainbow nation of ours but I love most that I feel like I have been a part of an evolution… In fact I still feel part of it. Our country is still going through so many changes. And I feel sure that the transformation will take us to being one of the strongest nations in the world.
