“I made true believers but now I need to lead. I gotta show people that there’s more from where Chana comes from” – Khuli Chana, the MotswakOriginator
It’s been a long journey for Khuli Chana. The Morafe kid from Mafikeng who slept on his friends’ couches and had to borrow cars and cash to survive while he recorded his debut album and hoped it would blow up is self admittedly not where he needs to be, but certainly very far from where he began. In this April/May issue Khuli takes us through his journey of hardship and the various ways it has culminated in success – performing in America and Europe, winning awards, owning the masters of his entire discography, changing the face of music and getting paid to do what he loves daily. All of these accomplishments are dwarfed by his genuine passion to develop the industry and break the mould of what we believe to be normal. A cause he has recently taken personal responsibility for; primarily through the creation of his newly formed record label MyThron (pronounced “My Throne) Records which he reveals his big plans for.
We also have exclusives with the likes of new kid on the block Priddy Ugly, who’s musical aggression and lethal rhymes are literally putting emcees out of jobs; and AB Crazy, who lets us in on the first chapter of his story post-Cashtime. JR takes us through the making of Kool Forever and tells us why life as a millionaire isn’t that bad. In other Major Leaguez interviews, Towdee Mac, Blax Myth, ICU and pH are all among the cats we chat to. On HYPE Honey, we holla at the flaming MTV Base VJ Nomuzi Mabena, who lets us in on her theories on extra-terrestrial activity, among other interesting things.
On the international front, we have an in-depth interview with legendary group Bone Thugs ‘n Harmony, who have reunited for a grand gesture in honour of their 20th anniversary this year. We also have a personal chat with Wiz Khalifa about life as a hip-hop daddy and his love for Chuck Tailors.
HYPE SESSIONS vol 50 is the very first offering and exclusive release of Khuli Chana’s MyThron Records featuring Hash One, K.T, Notshi, PDot, Blaklez, Towdee, Kaygizm, Gingerbreadman, DJ Raiko, AKA, Ice Prince, Wizkid, M.I, Sardokie, Nthabi and more. Trust us when we say, you DON’t wanna sleep on this tape.
All this and more in the April/May issue of HYPE Magazine out in stores nationwide from 1 APRIL.
