Dizzee Rascal used to think of “pop” as a “dirty word”.

The British rapper – who emerged onto the pop scene from a background of underground raves and pirate radio station appearances – admits his opinions about pop music have changed as he has progressed in his career, and believes it is not easy to make a catchy song.

He said: “People who act like ‘pop’ is a dirty word think that writing pop music is easy. I used to think that too. But the fact is it’s harder to make songs simple but still have a broad appeal. If it was easy then everyone would be doing it.”

The 24-year-old Londoner also claims to think of himself as an entertainer, a label he enjoys. He said: “That’s what I am: an entertainer. I do love the sight of everyone’s enjoyment. I want to get as many people involved, from young people to traffic wardens to cleaners. Everybody.”

He also claims he has cut down on his partying past since becoming more mainstream. He revealed: “I drink a lot less. Not even for my image, but just to have the energy to get through this s**t. It’s not like I’ve ever been an outrageous partier or anything, but I’ve partied a bit. Now I try and stay on the ball.”
